What is a composite filling?

A composite filling is a tooth colored material that is used to fill cavities. Composites consist of silica, quartz, and other materials used in porcelain. Initially, the material is in a putty state. After the decay is removed, the tooth is conditioned and the putty is placed in the tooth. It is shaped to resemble the natural contours of your tooth and cured (hardened) using a high intensity light.

How long does it take?

A composite is place in one visit. An appointment for one filling can take less than 30 minutes. If we are doing more than one filling, appointment times may take between 1-1 1/2 hours.

Do you place silver fillings?

There have been ongoing discussions to the safety of silver fillings. These fillings contain 50 percent mercury. There is no credible scientific evidence concluding that they are hazardous. While there is controversy over their safety, Dr Cash has other issues with mercury/silver fillings. Although mercury/silver fillings may have a longer clinical life than tooth colored fillings, they typically cause weaker tooth structure. A mercury/silver filling is not bonded to the tooth, therefore, to place a silver filling, more tooth structure must be removed to wedge them into the tooth. Mercury/silver fillings also expand and contract over time as you eat hot/cold foods which can lead to cracks in the teeth. They can corrode, leak, and cause stains on your tooth and gum. For these reasons, Dr. Cash does not place mercury/silver fillings. Dr. Cash believes with modern technology and materials, composite fillings can provide beautiful, natural, long-lasting restorations.
