What is a crown?

A crown is made of porcelain, gold, or a combination of both materials. After preparing your existing tooth, the crown will cover the tooth to protect it from potential fracture.

Why do I need a crown?

A crown is needed for a number of reasons. When a tooth has a large filling (especially large silver fillings), the tooth usually develops cracks around the filling or other parts of the tooth due to unsupported enamel. A custom fit crown is designed to be placed over the tooth to prevent the tooth from breaking. In extreme cases, teeth that are not crowned in time may need to be removed due to severe fractures. Implants and bridges are ways of replacing missing teeth which can increase the costs of treatment.

How long will a crown last?

A number of variances will determine the longevity of a crown. On average a crown will last 7-10 years. Dr. Cash believes this average to be low because of poor evaluation, preparation, and impression for the crown. At Stonebridge Dental, precise attention to detail allows for a better fitting, longer lasting, and natural looking crown.

How long do crown appointments take?

A crown procedure consists of two appointments. Initially, we will remove decay, shape the tooth, and make a custom made temporary. The tooth is shaped by removing tooth structure around and on top of the tooth. An accurate impression is taken of the prepared tooth and sent to the laboratory. A custom fit crown is designed and returned for cementation. This process takes approximately 3 weeks. At the second appointment, we will fit and adjust your crown. Finally, we will cement your crown.
